(c) Barim Curatorial Residency “How to Call a Curator”
On Oct 21, 2017, 7pm at Barim, “How to Call a Curator” opens. The exhibition goes on from 22nd to 26th (4pm-7pm).
From August to October, Barim curatorial residency has invited 6 curators (5 teams) based in Gwangju. During the residency, the curators have researched various themes from a perspective of visual arts with fruitful discussions. Simultaneously, we’ve invited Haeju Kim (Art Sonje Center), Sunwoo Nam (Ilmin Museum of Art), and Seonyoung Kim (Overlab) as lecturers and also invited an independent curator Jaeyong Park for a series of workshops.
Shared thoughts are such as : phenomena of equating the general or broad meanings of organizing cultural projects with the professional curations of visual arts and contemporary arts, conflicts between publicly important touristic, commercial, and pop cultural projects and artistic/experimentation oriented projects of artists and curators, lack of opportunity where people can research and share ideas based on art history, and fining a connecting point from past/history based arts to the arts of future. Most likely those were the questions toward problems and improvements regarding the art scenes of Gwangju.
Along with these lectures, workshops, and discussions, each curator went through a process of expanding and organizing their thoughts on themes, ways of approaching to a theme, methods of research, and forms of presentation, as well as there was a moment where everyone questions the multiple roles and attitudes of a curator.
Jiyoung Lee retrospects last 10 years of exhibitions in Gwangju and specific situations around those exhibitions with the keywords. From that archive, she tries to anticipate future exhibitions in Gwangju.(Pictures below!)

A game for predicting future exhibitions in Gwangju> is based on the most frequent 18 words that are extracted from the visual art exhibitions that were held from 2008 to August 2017. Rolling dices, a new virtual exhibition title comes up. The new title is somewhat familiar to us. Three cards on the wall are answers from anonymous Gwangju
curators.
